Absentee Voting Now Open for 45th District Special Election

Many Alexandria voters are eligible to vote absentee, but relatively few take advantage of this option, according to the Voter Registration Office.

Absentee voting is now available for residents wishing to vote for the area's representative for the 45th District of Virginia.

The special election will take place Sept. 4. The 45th District includes parts of Arlington and Fairfax as well as 13 precincts in Alexandria.

Polling places in the 45th District will be open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Absentee voting for the election began Aug. 10.

Many voters are eligible to vote absentee, but relatively few take advantage of this option. There are several qualifying circumstances. For example:

  • You commute and work for 11 of the 13 hours the polls are open. (Take into account those days when traffic is heavy or the weather is bad and it takes longer than usual to get to and from work.)
  • You are a caregiver for a confined family member.
  • You are unable to go to the polls in person on Election Day because of an illness or disability.
  • You will be absent from Alexandria on Election Day because of personal business, work, school or vacation.

To learn more about circumstances in which absentee voting is an appropriate option, visit alexandriava.gov/Elections and click on “Absentee Voting,” or call 703-746-4050.

Does this mean that we have to see Krupicka's signs for another month on Commonwealth...and the bare metal wire where the signs are missing?

Thanks for the reminder about absentee voting. Since the election is the day after Labor Day, and the first day of school, the absentee option will be helpful for many voters.

Rob Krupicka really doesn't have to put out signs or even campaign for his race to with the 45th. He's not running against anyone who can win, or has the money to win, or has the campaign to win. Rob will win the 45th in a HUGE landslide. This one won't even be close.

It's all about turnout Jim. The governor set this up for a low turnout, so Rob has to work to get elected. Take nothing for granted.

Gail, I agree with you on the fact that the election on September 4 will have an extremely low turnout, as predicted, but even still, Rob's not running against any formidable candidate. Tim McGhee and Justin Malkin don't have any shot, at all. I'm sure they wake up every day and know that. As a matter of fact, even with the low turnout that's expected, percentage-wise, Rob still has a considerable lead over McGhee and Malkin. The Alexandria Republican City Committee is so disorganized that they can't even put up six 'good' candidates to run for Alexandria City Council. Out of the three Republicans that are running, only, and I mean ONLY, Frank Fannon, who is a left-leaning moderate, has a shot at getting reelected. Wood will get easily defeated and Hughes will absolutely not get reelected. They don't have any Republican to run for mayor, either. So by supporting Tim McGhee to run against Rob, the ARCC are both wasting their time, money and energy. The ARCC is really a dying party in Alexandria. The few that remain, all 14 of them, they are almost as embarrassing as the Alexandria Democratic Committee, too. The Libertarian, Justin Malkin, no one in Alexandria has heard of him, so he's got no shot. Malkin would have been better off changing his last name to 'Euille' until after the election. I do understand where you're coming from about not taking any election for granted, but you and I both know that Rob will easily win on September 4. Rob's our next delegate for the 45th.

I agree! Rob Krupicka will win the 45th in a HUGE landslide, even if the expected voter turn out is low.
