AIDS Memorial Quilt to be on Display at Torpedo Factory

The largest community art project in the world will come to Alexandria on the evening of July 20.

Part of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, now 48,000 hand-sewn panels strong, will be on display at the this month.

The Torpedo Factory Art Center’s Art in Public Spaces will showcase a portion of the quilt beginning July 21, with a special preview reception on July 20.

The quilt is the largest community art project in the world. To make it available for the public to view in its entirety this summer, it will take more than 60 distinct displays over the course of 31 days in more than 50 locations throughout the Washington, D.C., region. In partnership with the Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS, the Torpedo Factory will showcase the largest display of panels in Northern Virginia.

A sneak-peek reception open to the public will be held July 20 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a suggested donation of $15. Proceeds will benefit the Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS. RSVPs are encouraged to events@torpedofactory.org

The Alexandria Commission on HIV/AIDS, in partnership with the Torpedo Factory Art Center, will host a community reception to “Remember and Recommit to End HIV/AIDS” on July 25 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with a short program starting at 7 p.m. Mayor Bill Euille is the honorary chair for this event, and it is free and open to the public.
