Alexandria City Council Democrats Raise $343K in Primary Race
Voter turnout in Alexandria is low on Tuesday, but the money Alexandria City Council candidates have raised is high.
Recent campaign finance reports show that Alexandria City Council Democrats raised $343,485 in the most recent quarter, doubling the amount since the previous filing deadline in March and spent $230,180, according to recent numbers from the Virginia Public Access Project.
The figures in the chart below contain amounts from candidates' campaign reports from Jan. 1 to June 1 of this year. Sean Holihan collected the most money, raising $49,750 and is leading the 14 candidates who are seeking one of six competitive Democratic nominations for City Council.
Virginia currently has no campaign contribution limits so candidates and corporations can raise unlimited funds. However, candidates must file reports and identify donors who give more than $100 according to the Virginia State Board of Elections.
Current Councilwoman Del Pepper raised over $18,000 and recently received $500 from Rep. Jim Moran's campaign committee as of June 7. Candidates were required to file pre-election donations exceeding $500 or more.
Councilman Paul Smedberg, who is seeking a fourth term, has raised over $20,000 and has the most cash-on-hand.
Vice Mayor Kerry Donley is not running again and Councilman Rob Krupicka is running for the seat to be vacated by Del. David Englin. Charles Sumpter declared his candidacy but dropped out of the race early on due to personal reasons.

And out of all the candidates listed here, who are currently running in today's Alexandria Democratic primary, the 'swift boat' PAC of Holihan/Barefoot/Gordon/Englin and others to be named later, goes after Boyd Walker, who has raised the least amount of money, and who had his campaign on the rocks. Now Boyd Walker has more name recognition that he could ever hope for going into today's election, so if he wins, which I still doubt, it also exposes what frightfully bad decisions might be made by John Chapman and Sean Holihan, in the future, as well.

It's the day after and we know how it turned out. The richest campaign attacked the poorest campaign, and both lost!! Boyd lost because he should have. Sean should have won but he lost because he did a really stupid thing and then denied it. I still think there is more to that story that will come out in the coming days. I hope we don't find out that Chapman was involved.
I can't wait to see the $ per vote chart once the next financial reports are public. It's too bad we can't get a refund on a contribution to a campaign that turns out to be a rotten dud.
