Alexandria's Bikeshare Stations Are Ready to Roll

Capital Bikeshare alerted membership on Friday that Alexandria's eight-station network is operational.

Alexandria’s eight Capital Bikeshare stations became operational on Friday, which was slightly ahead of schedule.

The bikesharing service sent a message to users on Friday afternoon to announce the news. The red bikes, which now display Alexandria’s crest on their frames, were loaded into docks around town throughout the day.

Alexandria began installing the stations on Monday at the following sites:

  • King Street-Old Town Metro station
  • Braddock Road Metro Station
  • Corner of Prince Street and Union Street
  • Corner of King Street and N. Royal Street
  • Corner of King Street and S. Patrick Street
  • Corner of Commerce Street and S. Fayette Street
  • Near The Henry at Pendleton and N. Henry streets
  • Near Trader Joe’s at the intersection of Pendleton and N. St. Asaph streets

The city will hold a launch event at 11:45 a.m. on Sept. 19 in Market Square to celebrate Capital Bikeshare's introduction to the city.

If you ride the bikes in Alexandria, let us know where you went and what it was like in the comments section.

can you stand it? We're actually getting progress on the waterfront. Bert and Poul and Katherine and Katy and the rest must be in mourning today.

The King Street - Old Town station was about 2/3 done on Friday as was the Braddock station - so not fully operational yet. Stations still missing parts.

How can it be 2/3 done? The station is either working or it isn't. Are you just talking about the amount of bikes in the docks? The one in Braddock appeared to be operational yesterday but did not have bikes in every dock.

There are some spots in both stations that aren't filled fully with bikes because the electronic device wasn't attached in several bike spots. Could the other bikes in the station that were done be used? Probably. They may have been finished after I walked by last night in the early evening (7:30ish). I was just noting that while they may be operational, I don't know if you can call it 'fully operational.'

One of the advantages of Bikeshare is that you can ride-to-point and don't have to make a round-trip by bike. So for Bike Share to work properly, there should be a mix of bikes available to check out and empty spaces to return used bikes. If a stand is completely full or completely empty, a Capital Bikeshare van must come by to rebalance (take away or add bikes, respectively). A common occurrence is for stations near Metro stations to get full in the morning (as people bike to Metro) and become empty in the afternoon (as people bike home). It will be interesting to see how much rebalancing will be required based on usage patterns in Old Town.

Correct, just was saying there still was yellow tape & no electrical thingy in some spots. Checked one out yesterday and it was awesome. Also noticed all spaces are now working.

I used one yesterday to bike from the King St metro to the waterfront (Prince & Union St), and it was great. I popped into the Torpedo Arts Center for the first time and had some ice cream at Pop's old fashioned and then pedaled back to the metro via Cameron St. Glad to have it in Alexandria!
