Alexandria to Receive Kudos for King Street

Alexandria to receive prestigious award from American Planning Association at Tuesday evening celebration featuring music and more at King and Union streets.

Alexandria's King Street has been designated "one of 10 great streets" for 2011 by the American Planning Association under the organization’s Great Places in America program

“King Street has been a great street since 1749. Through each subsequent era, King Street has successfully maintained its significance as Alexandria's commercial center and gathering place, thanks to careful planning, community involvement and historic preservation,” said Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille.

The planning group singled out King Street as a hub of activity where people gather to celebrate, conduct business, explore the past, or view the Potomac River.

To formally announce the award, a celebration will be held Tuesday at the intersection of King and Union streets beginning at 5 p.m., featuring music, performers, art and more. At 6 p.m., APA will present the mayor, members of City Council, and the City of Alexandria with the award.

Through Great Places in America, APA recognizes unique and authentic characteristics found in three essential components of all communities – streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces.
