Carpenter's Shelter Raises $30K Thanks to Run for Shelter
About 850 runners competed on Saturday in a 5K, 10K and fun run.
Carpenter’s Shelter hosted the second annual Run for Shelter 5K/10K and fun run sponsored by MRIS on Saturday.
About 850 runners braved the chilly November morning to participate in the race and help raise more than $30,000 for the Old Town Alexandria-based homeless shelter – the largest such shelter in Northern Virginia.
Josef Tessema won the 5K race with a time of 14:29, Hirut Beyene was the first woman to finish the 5K race with a time of 17:29. Dereje Tadesse won the 10K race with a time of 30:41. Woynishet Abebe was the first women to finish the 10K race with a time of 35:32.
“The money raised allows Carpenter’s Shelter to provide the very best shelter and services to homeless individuals and families looking to achieve sustainable independence in the community,” said shelter Executive Director Lissette Bishins. “We are so thankful to the community for their continued support and hope to see everyone again next year.”
The 3rd annual Run for Shelter will be held Nov. 23, 2013. For more information, visit www.runforshelter10k.com or tweet @Run4Shelter10k.
