Alexandria public libraries are celebrating the freedom to read by highlighting censored books during Banned Books Week.

From Sept. 30 through Oct. 6, Alexandria Library has created an online selected booklist for library users to peruse.  Also in celebrating the freedom to read, the Kate Waller Barrett Branch will highlight banned books that patrons may check out. Beatley Central Library will have a designated shelf and will participate in Virtual Read Out Loud, a banned book reading of Shel Silverstein's A Light in the Attic read by Youth Services Manager Joy Oliver.

Some of the books on display at the Barrett branch library are: The Absolute True Diary of a Part-time Indian by Sherman Alexie, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway.
