City Offers Five Design Options to Fence Windmill Hill Bulkhead

The city is considering five different options for a short-term fence around the deteriorating Windmill Hill Park bulkhead.

The City of Alexandria is considering five options for a short-term safety fence around the bulkhead at .

The existing bulkhead is severely deteriorated and imminent failure of the structure is possible, according to the city.

The options and their related estimated costs include a post and wire enclosure ($16,000), ornamental aluminum ($34,000), nautical post and rope ($32,000), split rail fence ($8,500) or a Kentucky board fence ($16,000).

The public is invited to attend a community open house to discuss the design of the safety fence around the park bulkhead, which is located at 501 S. Union St.

The design discussion is scheduled for Aug. 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Chet & Sabra Avery Conference Room, located in , Room 2000.

Individuals unable to attend the community open house may view design options at www.alexandriava.gov/recreation and forward comments by Aug. 22.

Safety fence design options and public comment will be presented to the Board of Architectural Review at a public hearing scheduled for Sept. 5, 7:30 p.m., in City Council chambers.
