Meals on Wheels Expands to Saturdays
Recipients soon will receive Saturday meals in addition to regular weekday meals. Sunday meals to begin this fall.
Home-bound seniors in Alexandria who receive Meals on Wheels services now will receive prepared meals on Saturdays in addition to the regular weekday meals they currently receive.
The Saturday delivery beginning July 14 is made possible through funds from the city’s Division of Aging and Adult Services and through private donations to Senior Services of Alexandria, which contracts with the city to operate the Meals on Wheels program.
Beginning this fall, seniors will receive Sunday meals as well thanks to funding allocated by City Council.
The Division of Aging and Adult Services, part of the Department of Community and Human Services, is the city’s Area Agency on Aging and is the only Agency on Aging in the state offering home-delivered meals on weekends.

It is wonderful to hear the City of Alexandria recognizes the needs of their residents by expanding the Saturday delivery program. Senior Services of Alexandria, which coordinates the deliveries and volunteers for the Meals on Wheels program, has offered Meals on Wheels service on two Saturdays each month since January 2011, thanks to funding from the Rotary Club of Alexandria and Alexandria Yellow Cab. This City funding will expand Saturday service and ensure it continues to be available for the home-bound elderly in Alexandria this coming year.
