Old Dominion Boat Club Hosts 'Leukemia Cup'

The event is part of a national program raising money for research and patient services.

The will host the National Capital Area Leukemia Cup Power Poker Run on Aug. 25.

The Leukemia Cup is a national program supported by the Leukemia/ Lymphoma Society, which raises money through various sailing and boating events. Eighty cents of every dollar raised is put toward research and patient services, including financial aid for medical costs, support groups, and educational programs. Last year, the events raised approximately $3.8 million nationally.

In the Power Poker Run event, there are five stops along the Potomac River. Boats stop at each site and a collect a card and when they are finished, bring their “poker hand” back to ODBC. The boaters can either play their hand or get additional cards by giving more donations. Prizes go to boaters with the best hand and the grand prize goes to the boater that raises the most money.

The event started in 2007 with 6 boats and raised $4,000. Last year, 31 boats registered and raised $16,500.
