Olde Towne Dogge Walke Joins Forces with Veterans Group

The fundraiser walk breaks ties with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, which plans to host its own separate event.

The Old Towne Dogge Walke will still occur in September, but after five years will no longer be in association the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

The fundraiser walk is planned for Sept. 30, but proceeds will now go toward the non-profit organization Veterans Moving Forward. This organization trains and provides service dogs to veterans in need of assistance.

Bobby Mahoney, director of the Old Towne Dogge Walke and owner of Capitol Heel, said the Animal Welfare League withdrew from the fundraiser about two weeks ago.

“We’re going ahead with it this year but we’re doing it for another beneficiary,” Mahoney said. “It’s going to be the same wonderful walk and great event. We’re just switching it up a little bit this year.”

Patrick Cole, director of communications and outreach for the Animal Welfare League, said the organization will conduct its own fundraiser in the fall. There are no confirmed details about it yet.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria holds two to three fundraisers on its own a year. Its largest fundraiser is called “Mardi Growl” and will be held in the spring.

Registration for the Old Towne Dogge Walke will open online within the next few weeks. It is set to occur at Market Square at 9 a.m., with registration at 8 a.m.

“It’s just such a loved event in the city we saw that we needed to go ahead and do it,” Mahoney said. “There was another organization out there that was happy to do it with us.”
