Silberberg Joins Democrats in Race for City Council Seat

Allison Silberberg, an Alexandria resident since 1989, plans to highlight social needs, economic development, education and civil engagement as part of her campaign.

Allison Silberberg plans to announce her candidacy for City Council at the Alexandria Democratic Committee on Monday evening.

Silberberg, a Parkfairfax resident since 1992 and an Alexandria resident since 1989, is a writer, advocate, public speaker and photographer specializing in advocacy and communications work focused on social needs, social justice issues and civic engagement.

She is the author of the best-selling "Visionaries In Our Midst: Ordinary People who are Changing our World," a book about individuals who are making a difference.

Silberberg has served on Alexandria's Economic Opportunities Commission since 2004 and has been the chair of the group since 2010.

She lists, among her accomplishments, initiating and leading the commission’s citywide effort called and last summer along with two-dozen donors, including Home Depot and 100 volunteers, they jointly renovated the city's homeless shelter.

“Alexandria is at a crossroads. It’s a national treasure. It deserves careful, thoughtful creative planning and thinking and implemention, but it starts with a vision,” she told Patch. “My vision for our beloved city is that I will continue to fight for the most vulnerable as well as focus on affordable housing and job creation, but also fiscal responsibility and ensuring the continuation of our Triple A bond rating.”

She currently serves on the National Chamber Ensemble (founding honorary board member); the CultureWorks Collective (board member); the Georgetown Senior Center (president of the board); and Sector Three Services (founding advisory board member).

She also has worked on Capitol Hill.
