The Campagna Center Welcomes a New CEO

Tammy Mann officially began as The Campagna Center's president and CEO on Aug. 1

For Tammy Mann, accepting the position of president and CEO of , allowed her career to come full circle.

Mann, a Fairfax – and former Alexandria – resident, officially began her new job on Monday. She comes to the center with a background in psychology and experience in dealing with policy surrounding early education.

“I’ve missed feeling grounded and involved at the community level,” Mann said last week.

Prior to acquiring her new title, Mann worked at the United Negro College Fund as the executive director of the Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute. In that role, Mann worked to inform policymakers about educational opportunities for African Americans.

She also worked as the deputy executive director of the nonprofit Zero to Three – once again acting as the middleman between policymakers and researchers. This time however, the focus was more geared toward very young children.

Mann will bring her early education expertise to her current position at The Campagna Center.

“The Campagna Center is extremely fortunate to have Dr. Mann join the organization,” Board Chairman for the center, Joan Holtz, said in a statement. “She will be a tremendous addition to the management team, and she has the experience to carry out The Campagna Center’s mission to serve the children and families of Alexandria.”

For more than 60 years The Campagna Center has worked to provide for area children and their families. It currently operates head start and early learning programs, and serves more than 1,700 residents.

And this aspect, in particular, attracted Mann to the position. Having the opportunity to interact with children and adults who come to The Campagna Center will be reminiscent of Mann’s work in Michigan. While obtaining her masters and doctorate in clinical psychology, Mann made visits to Detroit families with young children.

“The Campagna Center has provided a way for me to reconnect with that work,” she said.

The president and CEO position will incorporate both Mann’s early education background and the chance to directly impact local families. As part of her duties, Mann said she is eager to get to know the business and nonprofit community, in an effort to build partnerships.

“The Alexandria community is rich with resources,” she said. “There’s a lot to learn, but I’m very excited.”

Mann said she would look to “establish partnerships with like-minded people” and “build relationships with external stakeholders.”

In officially earning her title this month, Mann said she felt “extremely fortunate” to join The Campagna Center because of its commitment to the community and its supportive staff.
