How will you spend the first weekend of the New Year? Patch has found a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities for you to enjoy this Friday through Sunday.

The Patents and Trademarks of Steve Jobs – Art and Technology that Changed the World

  • Where: National Inventors Hall of Fame and Museum, Alexandria
  • When: Friday, Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 7 from noon until 5:00 p.m.
  • Why Go: Tour this educational exhibit honoring the creativity and ingenuity of the late Steve Jobs.
  • Price: Admission is FREE

Alexandria Farmers Markets

  • Where: Old Town Farmers Market in Market Square on King Street, and Del Ray Farmers' Market on the corner of East Oxford and Mount Vernon avenues
  • When: Saturdays; Old Town from 5:30 to 10:30 a.m. and Del Ray from 8 a.m. to noon
  • Why Go: Both of these markets are open year round, and both offer a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, meat and fish, dairy products, baked goods, and much more.
  • Price:  Admission is FREE.

Local Library Book Sales

Storytelling Festival

  • Where: Green Spring Gardens, Annandale
  • When: Saturday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m.
  • Why Go: Children age 5 and older will hear legendary tales and learn about storytelling techniques and traditions.  Registration is required for this event; please click on the link for details.  Children must be accompanied by a registered adult.
  • Price:  $6 for Fairfax County residents; $8 for non-residents

ArtNotes presents “Shade Parade”

Winter Ranger Hike

  • Where: Mason Neck State Park, Lorton
  • When: Sunday, Jan. 8 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Why Go: Meet at the Bayview Trail Head for a guided tour where you’ll learn about park wildlife and ways to preserve nature.  Please wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.  You’ll also need a bottle of water and, of course, your camera.
  • Price:  The weekend parking fee for passenger vehicles is $4
