Whistle Stop Hobbies Moves to Fairlington

The toy and hobby shop was located in the heart of Old Town.

Whistle Stop Hobbies, a long-time Old Town staple for kids' toys and crafts, announced Tuesday it will reopen in Alexandria's Fairlington neighborhood.

The new address is 1535-A Quaker Lane, next to Foxglove Florist, in the Fairlington shopping center.

Whistle Stop vacated its space at 130 S. Royal St. recently and announced the move on its Facebook page. It leaves the intersection empty of business with the corner lot at 320 Prince St. also vacant.

Any suggestions from readers for what type of business should move in there?

I don't know, maybe a hair salon? We don't have enough of those in ot. What a bummer, was nice to have some diversity.

We will miss having Whistle Stop in the neighborhood. My son is crushed. Sad that it is leaving.

I'm sure the rent in Old Town is high, but didn't they get a steady stream of tourists by being in that location? Seems as if the Fairlington location will only be frequented by the locals.

I talked to the owner about that today. He said the shop didn't get a lot of tourist traffic being a block off of King St. and definitely not in the evening. He's hoping the new location will attract locals, but also people hopping on and off nearby 395.

While at the new location, check out Reunions and Diversions in the strip along side the CVS. Need biking stuff...there's a big store on the corner. Lots of parking and variety so browse the entire block!
