Food Trucks Headed to Alexandria

City Council is expected to consider a proposal in June put together by staff.

Council is expected to consider a legislative proposal in June that would bring food trucks to the City of Alexandria. “It’s a win-win for everybody,” said Rose Boyd, special assistant to the city manager, at a Friday morning small business event hosted by the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association at St. George Gallery in Old Town. Boyd noted that the city is embarking on new initiatives to ensure Alexandria is small business-friendly and the acceptance of food trucks dovetails with those plans. City staff put together the proposal to go before council, which asked for the plan during a recent retreat. The trucks would be permitted anywhere through city limits 7 a.m. through 8 p.m. and allowed to park for up to four hours at a time …

Restaurant Inspections: 5 Old Town Cafes, Restaurants Checked for Violations

Patch brings you the most recent restaurant inspection reports from the health department.

Alexandria Health Department officials inspected numerous restaurants in Old Town Alexandria in recent weeks. We all want to know how our favorite restaurants stack up on cleanliness and sanitation. "Ideally, an operation would have no critical violations, or none which are not corrected immediately and not repeated. In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to Virginia Department of Health's website. The site continues: "Keep in mind that any inspection report is a 'snapshot' of the day and time of the inspection. On any given day, a restaurant could have fewer or more violations than noted in the report. An inspection conducted on any given …

Alexandria Tied to Tracks When it Comes to Norfolk Southern

City Council has many questions and little recourse when it comes to railroad company's request to expand operations.

Alexandria City Council members lamented Norfolk Southern's request to double the number of rail cars offloaded per day at its ethanol transloading facility in the West End at Tuesday night’s meeting at City Hall. Earlier this year, Norfolk Southern filed for a permit with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to increase offloading from the current 14 rail cars to 30 cars per day. Increased emissions under the plan mean Norfolk Southern needs an air quality permit to expand the scale of operations at the facility at 1000 S. Van Dorn St. Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday expressing its opposition to the issuance of a permit because of “increased air emissions” and requesting an informational meeting and separate …

Perhaps, as much as I hate the pollution and chance of a really terrible accident at the site, at least Council is getting a taste of how citizens who live in development zones in the City feel when they try to deal with Council, staff, or the Planning Commission. I guess it is too much to hope that Council might learn something here.   more ›

On a Strict Sodium Diet? Be Careful How Much Alexandria Tap Water You Drink

The latest annual report for tap water delivered to the City of Alexandria shows the water complies with state and federal requirements, but its unregulated sodium levels are high.

Alexandria’s water complies with or was better than all state and federal drinking water requirements, according to the 2012 annual water quality report from Virginia American Water, which serves Alexandria. Some interesting findings about unregulated water quality: For the full report, click here (PDF). The annual report is required by the Virginia Department of Health and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Alexandria’s water comes from two water treatment plants owned and operated by Fairfax Water – the J.J. Corbalis water treatment plant located on the Potomac River and from the Griffith Plant at the Occoquan Reservoir. Virginia American Water is a subsidiary of Voorhees, N.J.-based American Water.

'Love Your Show Babe:' Jack Diamond Exits MIX 107.3 FM

After 20 years on WRQX, the station pulls the plug on popular morning radio program.

For those who listen to Mix-107.3 FM, "Love your show babe," was the signature sign-off for morning show host Jack Diamond -- and how listeners signed off when calling in to the show. Loyal listeners may have noticed that Diamond was missing in the mornings the past two weeks, replaced temporarily by various hosts. But Diamond's not on vacation — he's off the station for good, according to the station. Two weeks ago, the Washington DC radio station WRQX-FM, owned by Cumulus Media, deleted all references to the popular longtime radio host on its Web site and loyal listeners unknowingly heard the last morning show by Diamond after 22 years on the radio station.  Will you listen to the new syndicated show taking its place? Take our poll. "The…

I have listened to the whole gang in the morning for a decade...the new girls added so much and there was a fresh chemistry between them all. This new show format and "personalities" is plane and simple" tacky and unmoving." Their topics are trivial, and the banter forced and uninspiring. Really..this show will not fly here....and I live in West Vurginia. Its just not a classy show...tacky and a …   more ›

Royal Street Bus Depot Poised to Hit the Road

WMATA's North Old Town bus depot starts to see movement in the transit authority's efforts to move it to Fairfax County.

Plans to move the Metro bus depot from North Old Town to Fairfax County are once again underway after several years of litigation appear to have come to a close. The Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority (WMATA) has been planning to move the depot, but a lawsuit by a homeowners association in Fairfax County clogged its progress. The case was ruled in favor of moving the depot, but the decision was appealed. In mid-April, the Virginia Supreme Court made a ruling allowing the bus depot to proceed with moving from its prime real estate location in one of the most expensive parts of Alexandria. Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille said he’s pleased that the depot will be moving from Old Town as he’s been advocating for that since he joined WMATA’s…

This (like the Harris Teeter site) is one of those head scratchers where I don't see how anyone who lives in OT North and deals with this every day has any other opinion than this is a great change. This site is a horrible, pollution-producing eyesore. I lived a half a block away from it for 14 years and always hoped this day would finally come. I can certainly see how some would debate retail vs…   more ›
