New Gelato Shop, First Day of School and Fishy Tunes

Plus, the Art League Gallery and yappy hour at Jackson 20.

A quick glance at what’s happening Tuesday, Sept. 3 in and around Old Town Alexandria:

Planning Commission — Alexandria’s influential body will weigh on permit proposals for many new structures and uses for buildings across the city beginning at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall. Highlight for Old Towners: A proposal for a new gelato shop at 111 South Payne St. (site pictured above).

First Day of School for ACPS — Mount Vernon and Samuel Tucker students have been back in the class for a month, but the rest of Alexandria City’s Public School system returns to the classroom this morning, including T.C. Williams High School. Be alert and on the lookout when studious feet hit the street by walking, biking, driving and busing to school.

‘Scapes — Looking for some new scenery for your lunchtime stroll? The Art League Gallery’s August landscape exhibit is currently on display. Artwork of all mediums inspired by environments as diverse as coastal scenes and industrial-urban areas is on display today from noon to 6 p.m. at 105. N. Union St.

A dog walks into a bar — Bring your pooch to Jackson 20 (480 King St.) at 5 p.m. for Doggie Yappy Hour, a tradition unlike any other.

Fishy Tunes — A DJ will be playing requested tunes beginning at 9 p.m. at the Flying Fish Restaurant (815 King St.) If you can handle Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” getting a couple of spins, I’m sure you’ll be fine with the rest of the tunes.
