Supporting Cancer Research!

I am focusing on something that has touched so many families, including my own - cancer. May 18th, join us for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life of Alexandria City.

Over the past several years, I have been amazed at the number of brave individuals in our community who I have come to know that are bravely battling cancer. When my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, I learned first hand what a devastating diagnosis cancer is. Cancer can take the life of so many wonderful people and it does not discriminate. It does not know age, gender or ethnicity. It does not care how many children or other individuals who require your care. But, there is hope. Each year because of organizations like the American Cancer Society, we get closer to finding a cure and offer support to those families whose lives are touched by the disease.

According to the American Cancer Society, “[t]he National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately 13.7 million Americans with a history of cancer were alive on January 1, 2012.” In 2013 alone, The National Cancer Institute estimates 1,660,290 will be diagnosed with cancer and approximately 580,350 will not survive their disease. For some, lack of health insurance or other obstacles can prevent them from an early diagnosis and/or adequate treatment needed to beat cancer.

Though the numbers of those touched by cancer are staggering, organizations like the American Cancer Society do tremendous work raising funds for cancer research, treatment, and awareness. This Saturday, May 18, I encourage you to come out, support and walk the American Cancer Society Relay for Life in Alexandria City.

I hope to see you there! Because cancer doesn’t stop and we won't either.
