Alexandria Animals Pet Photo Contest Starts

Sully is in the lead hours into the annual fundraiser contest.

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria's (AWLA) Alexandria Animals Pet Photo Calendar Contest is open now.

Proceeds from the contest support AWLA. Entries and voting start July 15 and continue through Sept. 15 at www.AlexandriaAnimals.org/calendar. The websites allows entrants to "reserve" a day for their pet to be showcased ($10). Calendars are available for pre-order through the website as well ($15).

Votes for contest entries are $1 each (starting at 5 votes) and so far a dog named Sully is winning.

The goal for this year's fundraiser is $40,000.

The 2014 cover winner was a dog named Kona. In a release from AWLA, Kona's human, Leah Mazer, said Kona was adopted. "I hope that by sharing her success story, that even one more person becomes aware of what amazing, beautiful, and loving animals rescues are and chooses to adopt his or her next pet," Mazer said.

AWLA runs the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter on Eisenhower Avenue and works to promote pet education and safety. AWLA was founded in 1946 and now places more than 1,300 homeless animals with local families each year.
