Equipment Failure Causes Thursday Power Outages in Alexandria

More than 2,500 Dominion Power customers impacted by outage.

A power outage that left more than 2,500 in Alexandria without electricity Thursday evening was caused by equipment failure, according to a Dominion Virginia Power spokesman Chuck Penn.

The outage began around 5:35 p.m. Thursday during evening rush hour, blanking traffic lights in parts of Old Town along Duke and King streets and snarling traffic.

The majority of Dominion customers had their power restored in just under seven hours, Penn said. All power was restored by around 3:15 a.m. Friday.
