EMERGENCY PREP

  • What’s the Deal? Free Emergency Preparedness Event
  • When: Thursday, September 22, 10 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Where: Target Parking Lot, 3101 Jefferson Davis Highway, Alexandria
  • Cost: Free!
  • Details: The Alexandria Office of Emergency Management will be participating in this event with Target and Target Pharmacy. Target will be distributing free preparedness kits to guests.

  • When: Saturday, September 24
  • Where: More than 100 national parks that usually charge entrance fees
  • Cost: Free!
  • Details: In celebration of National Public Lands Day the country’s largest single-day effort to spruce up parks and other open spaces, enjoy free admission at a national park near you! And, volunteer to help clean up a local park. Find a site.

BOOK FESTIVAL

  • What’s the Deal? The National Book Festival
  • When: Saturday, September 24, 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 25, 1 – 5:30 p.m.
  • Where: National Mall, Washington DC
  • Cost: Free
  • Details: More than 100 authors will headline the two-day National Book Festival, including David McCullough, Russell Banks, Dave Eggers, Terry McMillan, Pulitzer Prize-winners Siddhartha Mukherjee and Jennifer Egan, Garrison Keillor, Amy Chua and Toni Morrison. Children’s authors include: Carmen Agra Deedy, Tomie de Paola, Calef Brown, Cassandra Clare, Katherine Paterson, and Kadir Nelson. See the line up and schedule of activities.
