Frugal Family: Yoga, Pirates and a Story Festival

Here is our weekly round-up of events and deals in and around town: 

  • What’s the Deal? Alexandria Story Festival
  • When: Saturday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.
  • Where: Jefferson Houston School, 1501 Cameron St., Alexandria
  • Cost: Free!
  • Details: Ideal for children ages 4-10 and their families. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Event will feature author readings and children’s activities. The lineup includes Kwame Alexander (Acoustic Rooster and his Barnyard Band), Anna Dewdney (Llama Llama Home With Mama), Pamela Duncan Edwards (Princess Pigtoria and the Pea), Jacqueline Jules (Zapato Power), Susan Stockdale (Bring on the Birds), and others.

 

  • What’s the Deal? Talk Like a Pirate Day
  • When: Sunday, Sept. 18, 12 p.m.
  • Where: Potomac Riverboat Co., 205 The Strand, Alexandria
  • Cost: Boat Cruise: Under 2 – Free; 2 to 12 – $9; Adults – $15
  • Details: Explore Alexandria's waterfront history and discover your inner pirate by celebrating Talk like a Pirate Day. Activities include hunting for treasure and collecting pirate booty from local merchants, listening to pirate stories at Hooray for Books, sailing on a Pirate Cruise with the Potomac Riverboat Company and more! Treasure maps will be distributed on Sept. 18 at all participating locations including the Alexandria City Marina Ticket Booth and Hooray for Books! 703-684-0580.

  • What’s the Deal? Free Yoga Class
  • When: Week of Sept. 19
