Holiday Volunteering: Friends of Guest House

Guest House is a nonprofit located in Del Ray offering structure, support, supervision and assistance to female ex-offenders who want to improve their lives and break the cycle of incarceration.

The holiday season is here and that means Alexandria communities seek volunteers for many and different causes.

The Alexandria Patches are highlighting good causes seeking volunteers during this holiday season. If you’d like your initiative to be featured, please email sharon.mcloone@patch.com.

Who: Friends of Guest House

What: Consider a monetary contribution or donating items such as writing supplies (pens, paper, stationery, journals, postage stamps), household items (laundry detergent, paper towels, toilet paper, feminine hygiene products) as well as items such as Metro cards, umbrellas and gift cards to Target, CVS or grocery stores.

Where: Friends of Guest House, 1 East Luray Ave., Alexandria, 22301.

Why: To provide female ex-offenders the structure, supervision, support and assistance they need to become self-sufficient and responsible members of the community. A typical guest house resident is about 30 years old, convicted of a non-violent crime, lacks formal job skills, has suffered physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse and has two or more children who in the care of family, friends or in foster care.
