Old Town Alexandria Waterfront Proposal: High-end Residences, Retail and a Restaurant

High-end residences, retail space and a restaurant would replace the giant warehouse on Duke Street on the Alexandria waterfront under plans being presented to the city's Waterfront Commission.

Robert D. Youngentob of developers EYA were scheduled to outline the firm’s concept Tuesday morning (March 18) for the $200 million project, according to The Washington Post.

Graham Holdings, former owner of the Post, agreed to sell the current building, the Robinson Terminal South, to EYA last year.

The proposal is the latest in a series for waterfront, which has focused on resolving the friction between the desire for development and objections to congestion.

“We know there is a lot of controversy and history with the city’s waterfront plan, and we want to balance, not overwhelm, the area,” Youngentob told the paper.

The project includes a public promenade and upgraded pier that would allow boats and yachts to tie up for daytime visits.

Youngentob said EYA hopes to break ground on the warehouse project in the summer of 2015. The plans must be approved by the waterfront commission, the local board of architectural review, the planning commission and the City Council.
