Alexandria Takes Brunt of Storm Wednesday Night

High winds knocked over trees and tree limbs Wednesday night as thunderstorms rumbled through the Alexandria area.

Powerful thunderstorms moving through Northern Virginia Wednesday night did some damage in and around the area.

Taking the brunt of the storm: Alexandria, particularly in Old Town Alexandria, and in the Belle Haven area off of Fort Hunt Road as well as in the Groveton and Hybla Valley neighborhoods off of Richmond Highway.

WTOP reported that between 11:12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., "a narrow swath of wind damage" moved through the Alexandria area.

Photos posted to social media showed trees felled and ripped out of the ground from the high winds.

Forecasters are calling for possible thunderstorms on Thursday; the area should see some relief Friday from the high temperatures that have stuck around the past four days. Friday's high is forecast at sunny and 85 degrees, and Saturday will be in the 70s with another chance of rain and storms.
