Art League Celebrates 60-Year Anniversary with Pop Art in April

Save the date for 'Art on the Rocks' Thursday, April 30; the League has challenged seven local mixologists to create artistic cocktails using artwork from the exhibit as inspiration.

In celebration of The Art League's 60th anniversary in 2014, the Gallery is revisiting and reflecting upon the major art movements from the last six decades. During April, The Gallery is celebrating the Pop Art movement with an exhibition in the Gallery through May 5 and a special themed Art on the Rocks cocktail event.

There's an opening reception tonight (Thursday) from 6:30-8 p.m. at the gallery, 105 N. Union St., Studio 21.

Juried by Robin Nicholson, the deputy director of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, the April Pop Art exhibit will feature works by Art League members celebrating the iconic movement.

Like the Pop Artists of the 1960s, Art League artists are encouraged to use everyday items, consumer goods, and mass media in their work, coupled with cultural references and heavy doses of irony and wit.
