Exhibit: Tea leaves everything to the imagination as clay creativity flows

Don't be late for this important date! Join the Kiln Club party as they present Tea Table, a jured show of sippable ceramics at the Torpedo Factory at Center.

Scope Gallery artists have been madly working as a hatters, bringing handmade treasures to the table in the form of tea pots, trays, bowls, cups and more.

Creativity is flowing with teapots creating striking silhouettes and demonstrating gestural movement. Dramatic carving, spontaneous handpainting or warm earthy finishes round out a palate to pour from.

Hot teabowl, cup and mug forms are vividly emblazoned with molten and crackled glazes. Pick a unique sugar and creamer set for an afternoon repast or a pedestal cake plate to highlight an impressive confection.  Look for a glassy tea jar to keep tea and a lidded vessel for biscuits. Condiment bowls, butter dishes and brie bakers can hold spreadable goodness.

Fruit and flower trays and plates for cakes, cookies and other starters bring Spring to the table. If things get as toasty as a cheshire cat on a hot tin roof, one can put an al fresco party on ice with artisan pitchers, tumblers and goblets.

A handmade crystalline vase or candleholder provides celebration centerpieces. Artists have fashioned elegant coasters and to go with mugs.  Thrown bowls for salad, handpainted tapas plates for nibbles and platters for any course can make the tablescape enough of a wonderland to take tea like the queen.

The show will be juried by Matthew Grimes of Washington D.C., adjunct ceramics professor at the Corcoran School of Art + Design and current instructor at The Art League School. He creates high-fire porcelain and stoneware forms decorated with glazes and slips while pairing clay with other materials. He fires his work in woodfire and gas kilns.

The Kiln Club show runs from May 29 to June 24. Scope Gallery hours are Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Thursdays open until 9 p.m. The gallery is located at 105 North Union Street, ground floor Studio 19, Alexandria, VA. 22314.
