In Alexandria: Pharrell's Hat Subject of Pop Art Piece in Art League Gallery Exhibit

Iconic hat is subject of pop painting for new exhibit in Alexandria.

Recognize the famous topper? Pharrell’s hat is on exhibit this month in The Art League Gallery – well, an Andy Warhol-like interpretation of the now iconic hat is on exhibit. This month Art League artists were asked to channel the Pop Artists of the 1960s, and they delivered.

The work is titled "Happy," by Diane Blackwell, a nod to the chart-topping song by Grammy-award winning singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams, a Virginia Beach native.

In celebration of The Art League's 60th Anniversary in 2014, the Gallery is revisiting the major art movements from the last six decades. In April, the Gallery is celebrating the Pop Art movement with an exhibition in the Gallery and a special themed Art on the Rocks cocktail event.

Save the Date: Art on the Rocks

On Thursday, April 30, from 7-10 p.m. the Art League will hold Art on the Rocks, an event where patrons can enjoy the show plus a little friendly competition between local mixologists.

The League has challenged seven bartenders from Bastille,Chadwick’sColumbia FirehouseThe Light Horse Restaurant, RedRocks Neapolitan BistroUnion Street Public Houseand Virtue Feed & Grain to each select a piece of artwork from the April Pop Art exhibit as inspiration to create the most artistic cocktail and then compete for the title of Art on the Rocks champion.

A panel of experts including a representative from Catoctin Creek DistilleryJenn Larsen, the editor-in-chief of WeLoveDC.com who writes about art, theater, and cocktails; and Morgan Hungerford West, artist, creative consultant, and lifestyle blogger at PandaHeadBlog.com will crown the winner of the most creative cocktail, appetizer, and artwork pairing.
