“Most of the people here have had to listen to me play music over the years, so now it’s funny they were nice enough to cough-up for the charity and listen to it again,” he told WTOP.

He recalls his time at T.C. Williams for WTOP: "My teachers always loved me the year after I was in their class. I'd be walking down the hall and they'd be like, 'Chip, how are you doing?' I'd be like, 'What? Are you talking to me?' When I was somebody else's problem, we got along great."

The scholarship fund raises money for local high school students to help them afford college.

Esten lives in Nashville, Tenn., for the show while his wife, who he met while attending the College of William and Mary, lives in California with their three children.
