Old Town's Zento Offers Fresh Sushi and Booster Seats

Alexandria's newest sushi place puts its emphasis on fresh ingredients.

There’s a new sushi restaurant in Alexandria, and it’s not afraid of highchairs.

Restaurant veteran Terrapong “Max” Tangjaitaweesuk and his wife Chayanist “Amy” Monlijarutusana recently opened Zento, a new Japanese spot located at 693 N. Washington St. The space was previously occupied by Burrito Grill.

Unlike Del Ray’s controversial Sushi Bar, the owners have no problem with the idea of little ones coming in for dinner.

“We love kids,” Tangjaitaweesuk said. “We have high chairs and booster seats.”

But in seriousness, Tangjaitaweesuk said Zento is focused on fresh sushi and homemade ingredients. The sushi is assembled to order and the sauces are made in-house.

Chef Harrison Chan has worked with sushi for more than 15 years, with a bulk of that time in Tokyo. Sushi is available by the roll and also special assortments listed on the menu (available online).

Zento also offers salads, soups, rice bowls, lunch and dinner boxes and other dishes.

Tangjaitaweesuk put an emphasis on Zento’s happy hour, which runs from 5 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. It includes specials on beer, wine, sake, sushi rolls and appetizers.

On weekdays, Zento is open for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and for dinner 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. On the weekend, the restaurant is open from noon to 10 p.m. with no break in service.

Tangjaitaweesuk said he’s looking for a second sushi chef.
