Packing Up the Old Town Travelodge

Planning Commission will hear proposal to transform Alexandria motel site into mixed-use building.

Plans are in motion to redevelop the Travelodge motel and an adjacent parcel on N. Washington Street into a new mixed-use development.

The proposal, which Alexandria’s Planning Commission OK'd on Tuesday night, calls for a new 41,000-square-foot building at the corner of N. Washington and Wythe streets with 31 residential units above ground-floor retail.

The retail space, running more than 6,300 square feet, will likely house a restaurant, according to the permit application.

Residents will have access to three rooftop terraces on the new building.

The project will comply with the Alexandria’s green building policy and the applicant, Mahmood Investment Corp., will make contributions to the city’s public art, affordable housing and Capital Bikeshare funds.

The proposal will go before City Council on Oct. 19.
