Small Business Development Centers Offer Resources
Businesses looking to expand globally could benefit from a specialized program in Fairfax while others may be interested in an Alexandria workshop examining management of company finances.
Alexandria's Small Business Development Center is offering a seminar for area small firms seeking to understand more about managing company finances.
The free roundtable, "Small Business Banking Essentials: What You Need to Manage Your Company's Finances" will be held Aug. 21 from noon to 1 p.m.

This free meeting is held in the SBDC office at 625 N. Washington St., Ste. 400.
In other SBDC news, Alexandria small business owners looking to understand exports might want to examine the Virginia Small Business Development Center export program designed to help small businesses learn the ins and outs of expansion into global markets.

Passport to Global Markets is a 10-week program deisgned to develop an international growth strategy for a small business owner. The program consists of three full days of customized training (Sept. 7 and 21 and Oct. 26) combining panels and related exercises.
Companies also will receive trade counseling. The process leads to development of a detailed export plan and prepares companies for an overseas market visit.
The program will take place at George Mason University, Mason Enterprise Center in Fairfax.
Highlights include:
- Find the right financing tools for your company by meeting with trade finance experts;
- Leverage U.S. tax incentives for exporters to reduce your tax rate by 50 percent;
- Meet with freight forwarders to find the right shipping solutions for your company;
- Learn from other companies that have gone on trade missions;
- Develop a detailed export plan;
- Learn how to utilize Virginia's Foreign Trade Zones; and
- Receive individualized counseling from multiple trade specialists.
The participation fee for the entire program is $250. This is a selective program and companies must apply in order to be selected.
