ZipCar Expands Fleet to On-Street Spaces in Old Town

Carsharing company announces five new on-street spaces in Alexandria with available vehicles.

ZipCar is taking to the streets in Alexandria, as it has expanded its offerings in the city to five on-street spaces.

Previously, the carsharing company had vehicles available mainly at Metro stations and in garages.

In May, Alexandria’s Traffic and Parking Board approved five on-street parking spaces in Old Town for carsharing. They have since been leased to ZipCar, which inquired about on-street spaces in the spring.

City Council approved a carshare policy in January 2013 that allows the city to lease on-street parking spaces to interested companies on basis of qualification. An adjoining ordinance set the annual fee to lease on-street spaces in Old Town at $2,300 and $1,500 for Carlyle.

Carsharing companies allow people to reserve and rent cars for short periods of time, often by the hour.

Through its Carshare Alexandria! program, the city waives the Zipcar application and first annual fee. More information is available on the city’s Local Motion website.
