Extended-Stay Hotel Coming to King Street

Alexandria City Council approves plan to bring hotel use back to the former site of the Monticello Hotel.

Alexandria City Council approved plans Saturday for a 15-room, extended-stay hotel located at 805 King St.

Once home to a hotel for more than 50 years, the four-story building was converted into office space in the late 1970s. Local developer PMA Properties plans to turn back the clock, but offer large, more modern accommodations containing kitchenettes and living room areas for the extended-stay format.

PR at Partners hair salon occupies much of the ground floor of the building and will continue to do so. One guest room will be located in the middle portion of the first floor of the building, but the majority of the guest rooms will be located on the upstairs floors.

No front desk or concierge staff will be employed and most guests will arrange to stay at the facility in advance of their arrival, according to the city memo on the project. Check-in will be conducted using an online system or at PMA Properties’ nearby offices.

“This used to be the Monticello Hotel at the site location from 1919 to 1978,” Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille said. “Not that I was around in 1919, but I remember it very well along with other small hotels we had here in the Old Town district on the King Street corridor. … As we’ve grown and expanded and transitioned and changed over the many, many years, a lot of these beautiful-type places have gone by the wayside. This one was converted to offices and now it’s being converted back into a hotel. There’s not always opportunity to have modern, luxury hotels, but moving in the direction of boutique hotels certainly is the way to go these days.”

Parking will be made available to hotel guests at an Alfred Street garage and in a garage located at 1101 King St.
