Don Beyer Wins Democratic Primary for 8th Congressional District Seat

Former lieutenant governor will face Republican in the fall general election.

Former Lt. Gov. Donald S. Beyer Jr. declared victory Tuesday night in the Democratic primary for Virginia's 8th congressional District. He won decisively in a a crowded field of seven candidates.

"Proven! Principled! Progressive! And pretty darn happy," he said at his victory party, surrounded by his wife and supporters. Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe was by his side.

The man Beyer will replace, Congressman Jim Moran, congratulated Beyer on his victory:

“Don ran a tremendous campaign.  He distinguished himself with a deep knowledge of foreign policy, a steadfast commitment to addressing global climate change, support for common sense gun laws, and consistently strong progressive values,” said. Rep. Moran. “He’s the leader Northern Virginia needs in Congress.  I’ll be proud to be his constituent.”

Candidate Lavern Chatman released a statement Tuesday night: “Four months ago, we began our campaign and it has been an amazing journey. I want to congratulate Don on his victory.

“I've been able to live and realize the American dream because of the educational and economic opportunities in this District. I want every family – every kid in this District - to have those same opportunities.

“In the days ahead, I promise to continue fighting in the trenches for working families across Northern Virginia.

“I will advocate to make equal pay a reality. I will advocate for Medicaid expansion in Virginia.

“I will advocate raising the minimum wage to a living wage so folks can afford to buy homes and raise their families here.

“I can never thank each and every one of you enough for believing in me and joining me on this unbelievable ride.”

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, also a candidate, said: "I want to congratulate Ambassador Don Beyer, the winner of the Virginia 8th District Democratic Congressional primary. Don ran a winning campaign and can be proud of his efforts. I also want to thank those who supported my run for Congress, including Team Euille. While the outcome was not what we wanted I greatly appreciate your support, well wishes, donations and votes."

Beyer is the party's nominee in the November general election for the U.S. House of Representatives seat that has belonged to Congressman Jim Moran since 1990.

Pundits say Tuesday's winner will likely win the general election in November; the district voted 2-1 for President Obama, a Democrat, two years ago. Republican Micah Edmond will also be on the ballot.
