Ellen's Random List of Places I like in Northern Virginia

This last weekend I was helping a family find a home. They are completely new to the area and after we saw some homes they asked "Where can we get a good breakfast around here?"

This last weekend I was helping a family find a home. They are completely new to the area and after we saw some homes they asked  "Where can we get a good breakfast around here?"  I gave my recommendation and they went on their merry way. A huge portion of my job as a Realtor is to answer questions like this. Hey! It's important to know where you can get a good blueberry pancake, right?

It got my wheels churning and I decided to write this list of some of my personal favorite random businesses and places in Fairfax County.

Virginia Kitchen in Herndon for breakfast and lunch. This simple restaurant has been around for so many years and has loyal clientele an wait staff. It feels very "down home" and friendly and their food is good and inexpensive. They make a yummy breakfast as my new buyer's found out on Sunday.

Old Brogue Irish Pub and Kady's coffee house in Great Falls. I love this place for the food and atmosphere! It's like entering a cozy world full of warmth and comfort. They also have an awesome car show in the Summer months in their parking lot on Saturday mornings and live music many evenings. I love meeting friends there for lunch.   www.oldbrogue.com

Great Falls Park in Great Falls.  I've been going there since I was a child and it's really something to behold. There are many platforms/lookouts to see the falls, walking trails, picnic tables and a museum with bathrooms and refreshments you can purchase. I just love hanging out there. What an escape from the hustle bustle of Northern Virginia! Dogs welcome!

Lake Anne Plaza in Reston. Here's another place I've been going since I was a kid. Restaurants, Reston museum, coffee shop that looks out to the lake, small shops, art galleries and the Reston used bookstore. The farmers markets have started back up Saturday mornings and they are delightful. It consists of everything from organic produce/meats to arts and crafts. Say hello if you see me there.

Old Town Alexandria. The restaurants! The history! The shops! The people! Alexandria was founded in 1749 and was the hometown to George Washington, and Robert E. Lee among others. Interesting museums include: Gadsby's Tavern Museum,  Lloyd House, Black History Museum, Apothecary Museum, etc…

Spa World Korean Bath House in Centreville. I got turned on to this place years ago by my sister in law and love it. It's clean and upscale and a completely different experience than what many are used to in this country. If you find yourself with nothing to do and want to recharge your battery then go and soak in the bade pool (side note. You are with many women or men and all, including yourself, are naked) then choose among the many unique saunas. Check out their website as it's hard to explain everything they offer.  www.spaworldusa.com

Khalsa Integrative Medicine in Reston. Are you suffering from allergies like I am? Are you anxious, in pain, trying to have a child, but having difficulties? You might want to check this place out. Their  mission is  "restoring health…one patient-at-a-time utilizing natural, holistic and non-invasive protocols that include acupuncture, enzyme therapy, herbs, nutrition, yogic breathing, and WholeHealth Wellness." Their office is intimate and conveniently located near the Reston Town Center (another place I highly recommend going) I experienced acupuncture there and it blew my mind. Dr. Khalsa is so knowledgeable and gentle, it's no wonder they are so successful and have such loyal patients.  www.khalsamedicine.com

Torpedo Factory for the art lover. This huge art gallery is located on the Alexandria waterfront. It's comprised of approximately 165 visual artists who produce artwork in a wide variety of media including painting, sculpture, photography, stained glass, jewelry, ceramics and print making. The artists invite visitors into their personal studios where you observe them creating beautiful pieces right in front of you. Very cool.

These are a few of my favorite places in Fairfax County. I need to make it clear - No one has asked me to mention them in this blog post and no one is paying me in any way. No free blueberry pancakes for me! No discounts of any sort at any of these establishments!

What are your favorite places? Have you been to any of the places I've mentioned?
