Archaeology at Carlyle House Historic Park

The John Carlyle House is a ca. 1753 Georgian Palladian structure located in the heart of Old Town Alexandria. Rescue archaeology was conducted on the grounds as part of a research and restoration project in the 1970s. Despite the salvage nature of the excavations, the Carlyle House archaeological collection has the potential to broaden our understanding of the history of a complex residential and commercial site. This lecture will focus on the features and artifacts discovered in the 1970s, and highlight the on-going research into the Carlyle House archaeological collections. A selection of artifacts from the collection will be on view during the lecture. The 12:00 p.m. lecture is free and open to the public.
