Ice Cream Bowls & Free Art Activities at the Alexandria King Street Art Festival

The Art League brings a dynamic “Alexandria Art Experience” to the 2013 Alexandria King Street Art Festival. Through free, hands-on arts activities at Market Square and in the Torpedo Factory Art Center, and a yummy ice cream bowl fundraiser featuring over 1,000 handmade ceramic bowls, we'll share the enriching experience of our arts community with Alexandria and the entire Festival.

King Street Art Festival location: Market Square, Alexandria, VA (corner of King and N. Fairfax Streets, 301 King St.)
Dates: Saturday, September 7, 10:00 am-4:00 pm; Sunday, September 8, 11:00 am-4:00 pm

Weekend Schedule:

Saturday, September 7

10:00 am-12:00 noon: Kick-off art activity with Art League instructor Steve Prince at Market Square
Participants will join artist Steve Prince in creating a larger-than-life, mixed media community sculpture representing an icon of the visual art world. Each participant may adorn a puzzle piece from the sculpture using a variety of mixed media materials. Participants of all ages are welcome.

11:00 am-4:00 pm: Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser at Market Square
The Art League’s Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser is a delicious way to support the arts. Purchase one of 1,000 hand-made bowls created by the talented artists of The Art League’s Ceramics Department and enjoy local artisan ice cream from Artfully Chocolate in Del Ray — all for only $15 per bowl! The proceeds go to benefit The Art League’s Ceramics department. Participants in the Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser may enter a free drawing to win ceramic artwork and an Art League gift certificate.

2:00-4:00 pm: Hands-on art activity with Art League instructor Steve Prince at Market Square
Art League artist Steve Prince has created a custom t-shirt silkscreen for this year’s art festival. Join in the printing and keep a t-shirt as a festival memento.

12:00 noon-4:00 pm: “Get-A-Head” — The Art League at “Art Activated” in the Torpedo Factory Art Center
Join Art League instructor Lisa Schumaier as she leads budding art adventurers and willing participants through the exciting and entertaining process of creating capgrossos! Famous in Spain and featured in Latin Festivals, "Capgrossos" or "Cabezudos" are iconic, oversized, papier maché heads made especially for parades and community celebrations, like Art Activated. Participants of all ages are welcome to join Schumaier in the Main Hall of the Torpedo Factory Art Center (105 N. Union St.) for this activity.
