SoberRide Program Offers Free Cab Rides on Fourth of July

Planning on a drink or three to celebrate the Fourth? Keep this info handy so you can take a free cab ride home.

By Mary Ann Barton

If you celebrate a little too much on the Fourth of July, don't worry — you can take advantage of a program that offers free cab rides in the Washington metro area.

That program, called SoberRide, is offered by the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, a group of business sponsors and local cab companies. The group has provided more than 57,990 safe rides home since 1993 over the December/January holidays, St. Patrick's Day, the Fourth of July and Halloween.

Here's how it works:

  • You must be 21 years or older to use the service.
  • The service will be offered starting on the Fourth of July, from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next morning.
  • The free cab ride cannot exceed a $30 value.
  • You must call (800) 200-8294 (TAXI) for a free SoberRide
  • AT&T customers can call #WRAP from their wireless phones.
When waiting for a SoberRide, participants should watch for a cab from the participating taxi company in the area from which they are calling:

Participating Taxi Companies:
  1. Red Top Cab Company (Arlington County)
  2. Alexandria Yellow Cab (Alexandria)
  3. Barwood, Inc. (Montgomery County)
  4. Fairfax Yellow Cab (Fairfax County)
  5. Loudoun Yellow Cab (Eastern Loudoun County)
  6. Manassas Cab Company (Prince William County)
  7. Silver Cab of Prince George's County (Prince George's County)
  8. Yellow Cab of District of Columbia (District of Columbia)
  9. Yellow Cab of Prince William County (Prince William County)
