Christ Church Participates in SNAP Challenge in its Continued Fight Against Hunger

Alexandria, VA, March 30, 2014 — Christ Church parishioners are participating in the SNAP (supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps) Challenge during a week in Lent. From March 30 to April 6 participants will try to live on a SNAP budget of $1.30 per meal for a day, $4 for a day, or $28 for the full week. Challenge participants are forced to make food shopping choices on a limited budget and learn how difficult it is to avoid hunger, afford nutritious foods, and stay healthy without adequate resources. We recognize that living on a food stamp budget for a week or less cannot come close to the struggles encountered by low-income families month after month, but it does provide those who take the Challenge with a new perspective and greater understanding.

The parish will provide an opportunity for discussion of the experience on its Facebook page, ChristChurchAlexandria, and as part of a Lenten practices forum on April 6.
