It's a Ruff Life: Howl-o-Ween Is Almost Here

What will your dog dress up as this year?

Why don't angry witches ride their brooms?

They're afraid of flying off the handle.

It’s that time of year. You’ve been to the pumpkin patch, your pumpkin carving party is on the calendar, you’ve made at least one pie and you have a bag of Costco candy hiding in your pantry. The only question left remaining is how to dress up the dog for Halloween.

If you don’t have kids, don’t worry because there are plenty of places in Old Town to dress up your dog and take him/her to a neighborhood party. The most popular event is the annual Howl-o-Ween Costume Contest sponsored by and the to benefit the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. Prizes are given to the “most glamorous” (think Lady Gaga), the “best dressed couple” (owner and pet that is), “top dog” (overall best costume) and “most adorable adoptable” (new category for adoptable dogs).

Prizes include various packages for overnight stays at a Kimpton hotel. This year’s event will take place on Oct. 27 with registration starting at 4:30 p.m. and the contest beginning at 6 p.m.

The event is open to the public with a $10 registration fee for all participants, but entries will be capped at 50 so hurry down to get a spot. Owners can sip on Halloween themed cocktails and appetizers while dogs take the runway. It’s a guaranteed fun time for the whole pack.

also hosts an annual ‘Dog trick o treat’ on Oct. 23. Bring your dog in for some goodies while also shopping for last minute decorations. The event will take place from 12 p.m.-3 p.m.
