National Prescription Drug Take Back Day considered a success.

The Alexandria Police Department and Sheriff’s Office collected 148 pounds of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at the third National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

On Saturday, Oct. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the two Alexandria law enforcement agencies, with cooperation from the Substance Abuse Coalition of Alexandria, collected the prescription drugs and other medications for destruction at three sites in the city - police headquarters, Fire Station 209 and the George Washington Masonic Memorial.

Approximately 5,300 collections sites nationwide participated in the third take back day program on Saturday.

Last April, the two Alexandria law enforcement agencies collected over 193 pounds of prescription drugs for destruction in the second take back initiative.
