If you took the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Tuesday morning, you weren't seeing things, that really was a deer.

The Washington Post reports that a deer was spotted on the bridge during the morning commute.

Luckily the deer wasn't struck by a car; it "walked and galloped" as a Maryland State Police sergeant put it, until it got to a spot on the Maryland side where it could run into the woods.

The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offers these safety tips if you're driving in an area where there are deer:

To avoid hitting a deer:
  • Be alert at dusk and dawn especially in the fall.
  • Slow down if you see a deer near or crossing the road. Deer frequently travel in groups; there are likely more deer nearby.
  • Use the horn to scare deer away.
  • If a collision with a deer or other animal is unavoidable, do not swerve. Brake firmly, stay in your lane, and come to a controlled stop.
  • If you hit a deer, report it to law enforcement.
