Law Enforcers Collect 227 Pounds of Unwanted Drugs

The Alexandria Police Department, Sheriff's Office and the Substance Abuse Coalition of Alexandria collected the drugs on April 28 at three sites within the city.

The Alexandria Police Department and Sheriff’s Office collected 227 pounds of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for destruction at the fourth National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The two law enforcement agencies as well as the Substance Abuse Coalition of Alexandria collected the drugs on April 28 at three sites within the city - the parking lot of the , and Alexandria Police headquarters.

The service is free and anonymous.

More than 5,000 collections sites nationwide participated in the program this past Saturday and about 3,150 pounds were collected in the Northern Virginia area.

Last fall, the two Alexandria law enforcement agencies collected more than 148 pounds of prescription drugs for destruction in the third take-back initiative.

Other participants in this initiative include the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, International Association of Chiefs of Police, National Association of Attorneys General; National Association of Boards of Pharmacy; Federation of State Medical Boards and the National District Attorneys Association.
