Alexandria City paramedic Joshua A. Weissman, 33, of Bristow, Va., died Feb. 9 after a tragic fall off of I-395 the night before while trying to reach a burning car. Thursday, thousands of people—including the entire Alexandria City fire department, co-workers from Weissman's former station in Cayuga Heights, N.Y. and family and friends—are honoring him.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. at Beth El Hebrew Congregation, 3830 Seminary Road. After the service, a procession that could be a mile long will drive west on Seminary Road past Fire Station 206 where Weissman was assigned and loop back, heading east on Seminary, crossing Quaker Lane down Janney's Lane to Ivy Hill Cemetery, at 2823 King Street. A map of the route is available for local commuters and residents.

Prior to a memorial service Wednesday night, Weissman's brother Gabe thanked the people of Alexandria for their support. “During the trials of the past few days, as we’re beginning to comprehend and adjust to this new reality, the hundreds in the Alexandria Fire Department and with other emergency units from near and far have shown us with their steadfastness and compassion why Josh loved what he did so much."
