Update on Condition of Officer Shot in Alexandria

Officer Peter Laboy remained in critical condition Thursday morning after being shot in the head during a traffic stop Wednesday, according to City of Alexandria spokesman Tony Castrilli.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Sengel told Patch on Thursday that there was a very brief 9 a.m. hearing at the courthouse and that suspect Kashif Bashir, 27, of Woodbridge, is being held without bail at the Alexandria Detention Center.

The Thursday morning hearing was conducted via video hook-up from the jail, Sengel said. Judge Donald Haddock presided.

A preliminary hearing has been set for April 10 at 11 a.m. Bashir is being represented by a public defender, according to Sengel.

Motorcycle officer Laboy was shot Wednesday at the corner of S. St. Asaph and Wilkes streets, just outside the playground of Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy.

Bashir was driving an Alexandria Yellow Cab minivan, according to police reports. Police had issued a lookout for Bashir, who was allegedly disturbing women in a nearby boutique, reports The Washington Post.

Bashir fled the scene and led other police officers on a car chase into Fairfax County when the cab crashed on Fort Hunt Road, police said Wednesday.
