Alexandria Gets Kudos as a Great Place for Kids

America's Promise Alliance recognizes Alexandria for the fourth time as a great community for young people.

The City Alexandria for the fourth time has been named one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People” by the America’s Promise Alliance.

The competition recognizes the 100 outstanding communities across America that are the best places for young people to live and grow.

More than 300 communities nationwide, including large, small rural and urban, applied for the honor this year.

The alliance specifically singled out Alexandria for its focus on issues in education, gang violence and after-school programs. A list of all 2011 winners can be found at www.americaspromise.org/100best.

The America’s Promise Alliance, founded by Gen. Colin Powell, provides a catalyst for community-based efforts to demonstrate how children receive what it calls the Five Promises—caring adults, safe places, a healthy start, an effective education and opportunities to help others.
