Alexandria Mayor to Speak at 'Justice for Trayvon' Event

Mayor Bill Euille will speak in front of at a Sunday memorial event organized by the Justice for Trayvon Committee.

On Feb. 26 at about 7:15 p.m., Florida neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, 28, killed Trayvon Martin, 17, using a 9-millimeter gun. Both Zimmerman and Martin were legally allowed to be in the gated community where the incident took place. Zimmerman has not been arrested as police investigate the incident. The incident has become internationally recognized.

All Alexandrians are invited to attend the event. Hoodies are optional, according to the committee. Martin was wearing a hoodie when he was killed.

The program will begin at 7 p.m. and end by 7:30 p.m. The committee plans to hold a moment of silence at 7:15 p.m.

“Trayvon’s family and many others throughout the nation want justice, including Zimmerman's arrest, an investigation into the police actions at the scene of the crime, and an examination of the role the 'Stand Your Ground' law played in this incident. We stand with Trayvon's family,” says a statement from the committee, which includes Paul Friedman, Joyce Woodson, Eileen Rivera and Ed Ablard.
