Alexandria's Mayor Goes the 'Extra Mile'

Mayor Bill Euille has joined many other U.S. mayors in supporting Nov. 1 as "Extra Mile Day."

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille has joined more than 350 other U.S. mayors in declaring Nov. 1 “Extra Mile Day.”

It’s a day “recognizing the capacity we each have to create positive change in ourselves, families, organizations and communities when we go the extra mile in life,” according to the organizers of nonprofit Extra Mile America.

Extra Mile America started in 2009 with Shaun Anderson’s 4,000 mile solo bike ride across the United States, when he interviewed 200 people identified as “going the extra mile” by accomplishing something unique or overcoming major tragedy.

“Going the extra mile is doing more than the normal...more than expected. Going the extra mile is getting back up after we've been knocked down…despite whatever has happened,” Anderson said. “Going the extra mile is where change starts.”
