Corcoran Museum Move to Alexandria a 'Long Shot'

Washington, D.C.-based gallery of art has been seeking to move to another location that is more affordable and larger.

The possibility of the Corcoran Gallery of Art moving to Alexandria is a “long shot," according to a new Washington Post report, even though Alexandria officials have been pushing to bring the museum to their Virginia waterfront.

In June, Corcoran President and Director Fred Bollerer had told Post reporters that the rumor that the Corcoran is headed to Alexandria is unfounded, after Washington City Paper broke the news of a possible move.

However, the option is still on the table.

“We view ourselves as a long shot, because we think the impetus is probably to stay in D.C.,” Val Hawkins, president and chief executive of the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, told the Post in a story published Wednesday.

Corcoran Chairman of the Board Harry Hopper said conversations between parties were driven more by Alexandria officials than the Corcoran although nothing has been ruled out yet.

The museum, which has been experiencing financial difficulties, has been looking to move out of its Washington, D.C., location near the White House for well over a year in an effort to find something more affordable and larger.

Alexandria has been contemplating plans to upgrade and renovate its waterfront for years, often in the face of adversity.
